Mudhoney stretch out on Tomorrow Hit Today without losing the grit that makes them unmistakable. Released in 1998 and produced by Jim Dickinson, it swaps some of the blunt-force attack for a looser, groove-led feel, pulling in blues, soul and classic rock alongside those familiar fuzzed-out guitars.
There’s a warm, textured, slightly ramshackle energy running through these songs, with the band more focused on feel than sheer volume. Even so, the distortion and snarl still hit hard, keeping one foot firmly in their garage-punk roots.
It also carries a more reflective streak lyrically, balanced by the wry humour Mudhoney do so well. One of their more understated records, Tomorrow Hit Today stands as a compelling, confident evolution of their sound.
